Brown stink bug

The brown stink bug (Euschistus heros) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. It is a highly significant agricultural pest, particularly notorious for its impact on soybean production in tropical and subtropical agroecosystems.

While soybean is its primary host, this stink bug is highly polyphagous. It feeds on various crops, including dry beans, cotton, corn, and sunflower. The insect uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to penetrate plant tissues and extract sap, targeting both vegetative parts and developing seeds.

The life cycle of Euschistus heros consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and food availability. In favorable conditions, the pest can complete multiple generations within a single growing season, allowing for rapid population growth.

The damage caused by this pest is economically devastating. By feeding on soybean pods, they cause seed shriveling, pod abortion, and significant weight reduction. Moreover, the feeding sites serve as entry points for pathogens, leading to secondary infections that further deteriorate the seed quality and overall yield.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Strategies include monitoring population levels using pheromone traps, maintaining field sanitation, and utilizing biological control agents. When threshold levels are exceeded, the application of registered insecticides is recommended to prevent widespread economic loss.
