Euschistus picticornis

Euschistus picticornis is a species of stink bug belonging to the family Pentatomidae, order Hemiptera. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in various regions, particularly impacting soybean production. Its ability to adapt to diverse environments makes it a persistent challenge for commercial farming.

The primary host crops for Euschistus picticornis include soybeans, where it causes the most severe economic losses. However, the pest is also known to feed on corn, cotton, and various weed species, which act as alternative hosts that maintain the population density outside of the main cropping season.

The life cycle follows a hemimetabolous pattern: egg, nymph (five instars), and adult. Females deposit eggs in clusters, typically on the underside of leaves. Under optimal temperature and humidity conditions, the insect can complete multiple generations per season, facilitating rapid population growth and sudden infestations in agricultural fields.

Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing plant tissues with their stylets and injecting salivary enzymes to liquefy cell contents. This results in pod abortion, seed deformation, and reduced overall crop quality. The pest also facilitates the entry of pathogens through puncture wounds, causing further physiological damage to the crop.

Effective management strategies against this pest include:
