Dusky stink bug

Systematic position: Euschistus tristigmus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. This species is commonly known as the dusky stink bug and is recognized as a significant agricultural pest capable of causing substantial damage to various field crops and orchard trees in North America.

Host crops: This insect is highly polyphagous. It feeds on a wide array of plants, including soybeans, corn, green beans, tomatoes, peppers, and various fruit-bearing trees. The pest is particularly attracted to the developing seeds and fruits, making it a critical threat during the reproductive stages of plant growth.

Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle progresses through three stages: egg, nymph (with five instars), and adult. Adult bugs overwinter in leaf litter, debris, or other protected environments. As temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge, feed, and begin the reproductive cycle, depositing clusters of eggs on the underside of leaves to ensure a food supply for the emerging nymphs.

Feeding damage and economic impact: The dusky stink bug uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to penetrate plant tissues. They inject digestive enzymes, which causes internal tissue necrosis. On crops like soybeans or tomatoes, this leads to shriveled seeds, deformed fruit, aborted blossoms, and reduced overall yield, significantly impacting the market value of the harvest.

Management and control: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control.
