Brown stink bug

Systematic position: The brown stink bug (Euschistus variolarius) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. As a member of the stink bug group, it is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that feeds on plant juices, utilizing its specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Host plants: This species has a wide host range, making it a versatile pest. It frequently attacks soybeans, beans, corn, and various fruit-bearing vegetables including tomatoes and peppers. By feeding on a variety of crops, it can cause substantial economic losses in both commercial and private farming settings.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Euschistus variolarius progresses through incomplete metamorphosis: egg, five nymphal instars, and adult. Adults typically overwinter in protected sites such as leaf litter or crop residues. When temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to feed and begin the reproductive phase, laying clusters of eggs on the foliage of host plants.

Damage and severity: The damage occurs when the bug punctures plant tissue and injects digestive enzymes. This results in localized necrosis, deformed seeds, and aborted pods or fruits. On crops like tomatoes, the feeding causes "cloudy spot" damage, which makes the produce unmarketable. Severe infestations can significantly reduce the overall yield of a field.
