The Northern wood ant (Formica aquilonia) is a member of the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. While it is an essential component of forest ecosystems, when its habitat overlaps with agricultural or horticultural zones, it often acts as a significant indirect pest due to its complex behavioral patterns.
The primary agricultural concern with this species is its mutualistic relationship with aphids and other honeydew-producing insects. The ants actively herd, protect, and transport aphids across various plants, ensuring the survival and proliferation of these sap-sucking pests, which leads to substantial crop damage.
