Grey field ant

The grey field ant (lat. Formica cinerea) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Formicidae family. This species is native to Eurasia and commonly thrives in open, sandy environments, often encroaching upon agricultural lands, vegetable gardens, and orchards where it can become a nuisance to plant health.

The primary agricultural impact of Formica cinerea is its mutualistic relationship with aphids. These ants provide protection for aphid colonies against natural predators like ladybugs and lacewings. Consequently, the aphid population multiplies rapidly, causing severe sap loss, leaf curling, and overall decline in crop vigor across various vegetable and fruit plants.

Regarding their biology, these ants build their nests primarily in the soil. The life cycle follows a standard social insect pattern involving a queen, workers, and brood development. Their activity increases significantly during warm spring and summer months as they forage for honeydew produced by the aphids they farm, often transporting these pests to healthy plant tissues.

In terms of damage, apart from fostering aphid infestations, these ants can physically disrupt plant roots through their burrowing activities. In seedling beds, their nest construction can lead to root exposure or damage, causing young plants to wilt. Furthermore, the persistent movement of soil around the roots can weaken the plant's stability and expose it to secondary soil-borne pathogens.

Effective management strategies focus on disrupting the symbiotic bond between ants and aphids. Integrated pest management practices are essential for success:

• Application of systemic or contact insecticides targeting aphid infestations on foliage.
• Use of mechanical barriers like sticky traps or bands around tree trunks.
• Frequent cultivation of soil in garden beds to disturb and destroy underground nest structures.
