Description

The Japanese ant (Formica japonica) belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Formicidae. While it performs ecological functions in its native range of East Asia, it is frequently classified as a pest in agricultural settings due to its complex behavioral strategies and symbiotic relationships with other insects.

These ants primarily damage crops by acting as bodyguards for aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs. By protecting these sap-sucking pests from natural enemies such as ladybugs and lacewings, the ants facilitate massive infestations, leading to widespread damage across diverse fruit trees and ornamental garden plants.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. They form large, persistent colonies with nests constructed in the soil. Their tunneling activities can disturb the soil structure around the root systems of crops, potentially disrupting nutrient and water uptake during periods of high nest activity.

Damage is characterized by severe plant stress, stunted growth, and leaf curling caused by the unchecked proliferation of aphids. The honeydew excreted by these aphids attracts sooty mold, which coats the foliage, interferes with photosynthesis, and significantly reduces both plant vigor and the final fruit yield.
