This species of ant is most common in forest-steppe and steppe zones, preferring dry and sunny areas. Although Formica lepida is not a highly specialized pest, it actively supports colonies of sap-sucking insects, such as aphids and scale insects, which extract juices from young shoots and leaves of various agricultural crops.

The biology of the species is characterized by the formation of nests in the soil or in the base of old stumps and wood. The development cycle includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The ants are most active during the warm season, creating a developed communication network to forage for honeydew, which they guard diligently against natural predators.

The damage caused by ants lies in the indirect destruction of the crop. By protecting aphids from entomophages (such as ladybugs and lacewings), they facilitate the exponential growth of pest populations. This leads to leaf curling, weakened photosynthesis, the transmission of plant viral diseases, and a decrease in the quality of marketable produce.
