Red-barbed ant

Systematic position. The Red-barbed ant (Formica rufibarbis) belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Formicidae. It is a common ant species found in various habitats across Eurasia. In agricultural settings, it is often considered a nuisance due to its symbiotic relationships with honeydew-producing insects.

Damaged crops. While they do not consume plant tissues directly, they impact a wide variety of horticultural and agricultural crops, including fruit trees, berries, and ornamental shrubs. Any plant susceptible to aphids or scale insects can be indirectly harmed by these ants, as they defend these pests from natural predators.

Biology and life cycle. The colony development of Formica rufibarbis follows a standard social insect life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. They are resilient and often establish nests in soil, near roots, or under garden debris. Their high level of activity and territorial behavior make them persistent inhabitants of garden ecosystems.

Character of damage and economic impact. The primary form of damage is the active tending and protection of aphids. By preventing predatory insects like ladybirds and lacewings from reaching the aphids, the ants ensure that the aphid population multiplies, leading to severe leaf curling, stunted growth, and the transmission of plant viruses. In high concentrations, their nesting activities can also disturb the soil around young plant roots.

Control measures. Effective management strategies involve a mix of physical and chemical barriers. Placing sticky traps or mechanical barriers on trunks is recommended to prevent ant migration. Additionally, using targeted bait stations with non-toxic or low-impact insecticides can help manage population levels. Most importantly, controlling the aphid infestation itself will decrease the attractiveness of the plant to the ants.
