Guest ant

The guest ant (lat. Formicoxenus) is a genus of tiny social parasites within the Formicidae family, subfamily Myrmicinae. These ants are well-known for their unique lifestyle of living as "guests" inside the nests of larger ant species, particularly those of the Formica and Myrmica genera. Their presence often goes unnoticed due to their small stature and cryptic behavior.

From an agronomical perspective, they are classified as indirect pests. By infiltrating the colonies of beneficial predatory ants, Formicoxenus disrupts the natural pest control services these colonies provide. Since beneficial ants usually hunt garden pests like aphids and caterpillars, the presence of parasites like the guest ant weakens the colony's ability to protect the surrounding flora.

The biology of Formicoxenus is fascinating as they utilize chemical mimicry to integrate into the host colony without being attacked. They feed on the resources gathered by the host ants and even practice trophallaxis. Their development is fully confined within the host nest, making them obligate inhabitants that rely entirely on the survival of the host species for their own life cycle.

Damage caused by these insects is primarily ecological and indirect. When host ant populations decrease or their foraging activity is impaired by parasites, plant health suffers due to uncontrolled outbreaks of hemipteran pests like scale insects or aphids. Furthermore, excessive tunneling by the host colony, potentially exacerbated by the stress caused by guest ants, can disturb soil structure near the root zones of vegetable crops.

Management strategies focus on general ant control rather than targeting the guest ant specifically. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques, including the use of targeted baits and soil cultivation, are recommended to maintain colony populations at manageable levels. Encouraging natural predators and ensuring healthy soil moisture levels helps to minimize the nesting activity of ants that might be targeted by these parasites.
