Olive lace bug

Froggattia olivinia

Description

Froggattia olivinia, commonly known as the olive lace bug, is a specific pest that primarily affects olive trees (Olea europaea). Classified within the family Tingidae, order Hemiptera, these insects are characterized by their delicate, lace-like appearance of the hemelytra. They are significant pests in regions where commercial olive production is established.

The primary host for this pest is the olive tree. While the damage is often localized, heavy infestations can lead to substantial physiological stress for the tree. The lace bugs suck sap from the leaves, which directly impacts the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis, thereby reducing both the yield and the overall health of the tree.

The life cycle of the olive lace bug follows a hemimetabolous development. Adult bugs typically overwinter in sheltered spots, such as cracks in the bark or amongst leaf litter. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to the foliage to feed and lay eggs. Throughout the growing season, the population can increase significantly as multiple generations overlap.

The damage caused by Froggattia olivinia is easily identified by the presence of chlorotic spots on the upper surface of the leaves, corresponding to the feeding sites on the underside. Over time, these spots turn necrotic. Additionally, the insects secrete honeydew, which attracts sooty mold, further interfering with the tree's vital processes and leading to premature defoliation.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to handle this pest:

  • Maintain good orchard hygiene by removing debris and pruned material.
  • Promote natural predators, such as spiders, lacewings, and predatory beetles, within the orchard.
  • Apply systemic or contact insecticides when monitoring indicates that economic thresholds are exceeded.
  • Ensure adequate tree hydration and nutrition to help the plant recover from insect stress.
  • Monitor the underside of leaves systematically during the early season to detect the first nymphs.
