Systematic position: The dwarf pond snail (Latin: Galba palustris, often synonymous with Lymnaea truncatula) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and family Lymnaeidae. It is a small amphibious freshwater snail capable of surviving in both shallow water and wet terrestrial habitats, making it a persistent resident of marshy agricultural lands.

Crops damaged: While primarily known as a vector for parasites affecting livestock, Galba palustris can cause indirect damage to various agricultural crops. It tends to congregate in waterlogged fields, damp pastures, and nurseries, where it may feed on seedlings, causing stunted growth or total destruction of delicate young plants in high-moisture conditions.

Biology and life cycle: The snail is a hermaphrodite with a life cycle highly dependent on moisture levels. It thrives in damp soil or shallow water, where it lays clusters of eggs on vegetation or debris. Under favorable warm and wet conditions, it can reproduce rapidly, leading to significant population booms that can quickly colonize large areas of wetlands.

Damage patterns and harmfulness: The direct damage involves grazing on leaves and stems of crops. However, the most significant threat is its role as the primary intermediate host for the liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica). This makes the presence of Galba palustris on grazing land a serious hazard to animal health, as livestock ingest the larvae while feeding, leading to severe outbreaks of fascioliasis.

Protection measures: Management of this pest focuses on habitat modification to make environments less suitable for survival:

• Implementing effective drainage systems to remove standing water from fields and pastures.
• Leveling land to prevent waterlogging and pool formation after rains.
• Mowing vegetation around ditches and field borders to reduce moist shelter areas.
