Pond snail

Pond snails (genus Limnaea) are freshwater pulmonate mollusks that can cause significant damage to agricultural crops under specific agro-technical conditions. Systematically, they belong to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, order Basommatophora, and family Lymnaeidae. While their primary habitat is water, during periods of soil saturation, they are capable of damaging plants near shorelines or on flooded field sections.

These mollusks most often damage vegetable and salad crops grown on waterlogged soils or in open-field conditions with poor drainage. Pond snails feed on the soft tissues of young plants, gnawing holes in leaves and stems, which leads to a weakened plant immune system and an increased risk of secondary fungal or bacterial infections.

The biology of pond snails is closely tied to the presence of water. They are hermaphrodites with high fecundity. Eggs are laid on underwater plant parts, stones, or other substrates in the form of gelatinous egg masses. The life cycle includes egg, larval, and adult stages. Favorable conditions for their active reproduction include stagnant or slow-moving water bodies and high soil humidity, allowing the mollusks to leave the aquatic environment to feed on land.

The type of damage is determined by the rasping mouthparts (radula). Plants damaged by pond snails lose their commercial quality, and in cases of mass infestation, total loss of seedlings or young shoots is possible. Damage becomes particularly noticeable during periods of prolonged rainfall, when water levels rise, providing pests access to cultivated plots.
