Spiny orb-weaver

The Spiny orb-weaver (Gasteracantha cancriformis) is a well-known member of the Araneidae family. While these spiders are predators and often considered beneficial due to their ability to catch various insects, their presence in agricultural environments requires careful management to ensure they do not disrupt the balance of the local ecosystem or interfere with crop development.

Taxonomically, this species belongs to the order Araneae and the family Araneidae. It is easily recognized by its bright, crab-like abdomen with six prominent spines. These features provide structural defense against avian predators, allowing the spider to thrive in diverse environments, ranging from woodland edges to managed agricultural landscapes.
