Systematic position: This insect belongs to the order Isoptera and the family Termitidae. It is a highly specialized species known for its mound-building behavior and complex social hierarchy, commonly found in the tropical ecosystems of Southeast Asia.

Affected crops: The pest poses a significant threat to agricultural sectors, particularly industrial tree plantations. It is highly destructive to oil palms, rubber trees, coconut palms, and various nursery saplings, often causing substantial economic losses in forest management and fruit production.

Biology and life cycle: The colony consists of specialized castes including the queen, king, workers, and soldiers. A distinctive defensive feature is the soldier's ability to excrete a bright yellow liquid that solidifies rapidly, effectively neutralizing predators. The lifecycle is characterized by gradual metamorphosis, with colonies growing into vast networks of tunnels and mounds.

Nature of damage and destructiveness: Workers feed on cellulose-rich tissues, tunneling through roots, trunks, and stumps. This activity compromises the structural integrity of the host plant, disrupts nutrient flow, and often leads to the death of the tree. The physical damage also creates entry points for secondary pathogens and wood-rotting fungi.

Protection measures: Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

  • Conducting routine surveys to identify and map active mounds.
  • Applying slow-acting insecticide baits that allow foragers to transfer toxins back to the colony.
  • Implementing soil barrier treatments using termiticides around vulnerable crop bases.
