Description

Systematic position. The oak sapling borer (Goes pulverulentus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae (longhorned beetles). This species is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest that primarily targets hardwood trees, causing structural damage to their trunks and branches.

Host plants. The larvae of this species demonstrate a preference for several deciduous tree genera. Common hosts include oaks (Quercus), hickories (Carya), beeches (Fagus), and lindens (Tilia). They tend to infest saplings or the branches of larger trees, particularly those that are already under physiological stress.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Goes pulverulentus is relatively long, often spanning two to four years from egg to adult. Adults typically emerge during the summer months. After mating, females deposit eggs into the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood, where they create extensive galleries while feeding.

This internal feeding disrupts the tree's vascular system, leading to canopy dieback and reduced vigor.
