Description
Graeffea rosea, commonly known as the coconut stick insect, is a major agricultural pest belonging to the order Phasmatodea and the family Phasmatidae. It is primarily found in the Pacific region, where it poses a significant threat to the productivity of coconut palm plantations.
The insect feeds exclusively on the foliage of coconut palms and several related species of palm trees. Due to their camouflaging body shape and coloration, these insects are extremely difficult to detect in the early stages of infestation, often leading to significant leaf damage before they are identified by plantation managers.
The lifecycle of Graeffea rosea involves incomplete metamorphosis. Females drop eggs from the canopy onto the forest floor. These eggs undergo a development period before nymphs hatch and climb back up the trunk to reach the palm leaves. The entire development cycle takes several months, influenced heavily by ambient humidity and temperature levels.
The damage caused by the coconut stick insect is characterized by heavy defoliation. Nymphs and adults chew large sections of the leaflets, eventually leaving only the midribs intact. Severe infestations lead to a total loss of leaf surface area, which dramatically reduces the tree's ability to produce nuts and may cause the death of the palm if the infestation is repeated over several seasons.
