Description
The Ashy diving beetle (Graphoderus cinereus) is a predatory aquatic insect belonging to the family Dytiscidae and the order Coleoptera. While it is a natural component of freshwater ecosystems, it becomes a significant nuisance and pest in aquaculture settings, specifically targeting fish nurseries and hatcheries.
The beetle primarily impacts fry and juvenile fish. Because of their voracious predatory nature, both adult beetles and their larvae pose a lethal threat to young fish, attacking them in the shallow, stagnant waters of nursery ponds where fry are most vulnerable during their early growth stages.
Regarding its biology, Graphoderus cinereus follows a complete metamorphosis cycle. Adults overwinter in bottom sediments or among submerged vegetation. In spring, females deposit eggs into the tissues of aquatic plants. The larvae, which are highly active hunters, undergo several instars while consuming zooplankton and, eventually, fish larvae as they grow in size.
The economic harm caused by this beetle involves direct mortality of fish fingerlings, which significantly disrupts stock density and reduces yield expectations. In highly infested ponds, the predatory pressure from a dense population of diving beetles can lead to catastrophic losses of sensitive fish species if left unmanaged.
Management and protection strategies are essential for maintaining healthy pond environments:
- Complete drainage and drying of ponds during the off-season to eliminate overwintering adults.
- Regular removal of submerged and emergent weeds that serve as egg-laying sites.
- Installation of fine-mesh screens on water supply inlets to prevent beetle entry.
- Monitoring of larval density to initiate control measures before fry are introduced to the pond.
