Striped bug

Systematic position: The striped bug (Graphosoma lineatum, often referred to as Graphosoma italicum) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Pentatomidae family. It is easily identifiable by its bold, red-and-black longitudinal stripes, a classic example of aposematic coloration intended to warn predators of its unpleasant taste.

Host plants and damage: This pest primarily feeds on members of the Apiaceae family. Common host plants include carrots, parsley, dill, parsnips, and fennel. By using their piercing-sucking mouthparts, the bugs extract plant juices from stems, leaves, and developing seeds, which stunts plant growth and development.

Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters as an adult in sheltered locations such as leaf litter, tall grass, or soil crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed and mate. Females lay clusters of eggs on the leaves of host plants. The nymphs go through five developmental stages (instars) before reaching maturity, gradually resembling the adult stage during each molt.

Economic impact: Damage is most severe when large populations feed on flower umbels, causing the abortion of seeds and a significant reduction in seed yield. On leafy crops, the constant suction of sap causes foliage to wilt and turn yellow. Furthermore, the bugs produce a secretion with an unpleasant odor, which can taint the harvested produce if the bugs are accidentally included during harvest.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Graphosoma populations. Key strategies include:

• Regular removal of weeds, especially wild carrots and hemlock, which serve as alternative food sources.
• Deep soil cultivation after harvest to disturb overwintering sites.
• Application of selective insecticides during the peak of nymph activity, provided the crop is not close to harvest.
