Striped shield bug

Taxonomic position. The striped shield bug (Graphosoma rubrolineatum) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. This species is easily recognizable by its bold red and black longitudinal stripes, which function as aposematic coloration, signaling its unpalatability to potential predators in the natural environment.

Host crops. The primary hosts for this pest are plants belonging to the Apiaceae family. This includes a wide range of commercially important crops such as carrots, dill, parsley, fennel, and coriander. Because the bug is highly adapted to these specific plants, it can reach high population densities in fields dedicated to seed production of these vegetables.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Adults overwinter in sheltered locations, such as leaf litter or garden debris. Upon the arrival of spring, they emerge, mate, and begin laying eggs in clustered groups on the stems or leaves of host plants. The nymphs emerge and undergo several molts before reaching the adult stage, typically completing one to two generations per year depending on the climate.

Damage and economic impact. Both adults and nymphs are sap-sucking insects. Using their piercing-sucking mouthparts, they extract fluids from the plant tissues. The feeding process leaves behind necrotic spots and can cause severe wilting. The most critical damage occurs when the bugs feed on the developing umbels and seeds, leading to poor seed set, low germination rates, and significantly reduced yield, which can be devastating for commercial seed crops.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential to control this bug. Cultural practices include removing crop debris and eliminating wild Apiaceae weeds near fields to reduce overwintering sites. In cases of heavy infestation, chemical control using registered insecticides is necessary. It is recommended to apply treatments during early growth stages if monitoring indicates high pest density, while always being mindful of pollinators and beneficial insects that may visit the blooming umbels.
