Striped shield bug

Systematic position: Graphosoma semipunctatum belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. While closely related to the common striped shield bug (Graphosoma lineatum), this specific species is recognized by its distinct coloration patterns and a preference for specific botanical hosts within the Apiaceae family.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets umbelliferous plants. It is commonly found on crops such as carrots, parsley, dill, fennel, and coriander, especially when these crops are grown for seed production. The presence of wild umbellifers in or near the field often serves as a primary source for initial infestation.

Biology and life cycle: The bug overwinters in the adult stage, typically seeking shelter in plant debris, leaf litter, or loose soil. With the onset of warm spring weather, they emerge and move to host plants to feed and mate. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the stems or flowers of host plants. The nymphs undergo five molts before reaching adulthood, and their development is synchronized with the flowering stages of their preferred crops.

Damage and pest impact: Both nymphs and adults utilize piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap from plant tissues. They show a strong preference for the developing seeds and flower stalks. The damage manifests as localized necrosis, stunted growth of the flower heads, and severe reduction in seed yield and quality, as the punctured seeds often fail to mature or become non-viable.

Control measures: Management of Graphosoma semipunctatum requires an integrated approach. Essential practices include:

• Rigorous sanitation to eliminate wild umbelliferous weeds in buffer zones.
• Deep tillage post-harvest to disrupt overwintering habitats.
• Regular field monitoring during the flowering stage to assess population density.
• Application of insecticides only when economic thresholds are reached, using products compatible with integrated pest management (IPM) guidelines.
