Graptodytes pictus, commonly referred to as the painted diving beetle, is a species of beetle in the family Dytiscidae. Although primarily recognized as aquatic predators, their presence in irrigation systems, ornamental ponds, and rice paddies can pose risks to specific agricultural practices that rely on controlled aquatic environments.

The biology of this species follows a complete metamorphosis life cycle, involving egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Both the larvae and adults are highly mobile in water. They thrive in stagnant or slow-moving water bodies, which provide the necessary conditions for their breeding and development throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by these insects is primarily related to the predatory behavior of the larvae. While they feed mostly on small aquatic organisms, they can cause incidental or direct damage to submerged parts of aquatic crops. By grazing on tender stems and roots, they create entry points for secondary pathogens and bacteria.

In terms of crop harm, heavy infestations can lead to stunted growth or decay in sensitive vegetation. The mechanical damage to plant tissues is often underestimated, but in high-density populations, these beetles can negatively impact the overall vigor and survival rate of aquatic crop seedlings.

Key steps include maintaining clean water sources, avoiding excessive aquatic weed accumulation that provides shelter for larvae, and employing mechanical filters in hydroponic or irrigation water supply systems to block the movement of adult beetles.
