Systematic position: Graptodytes varius belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Dytiscidae (diving beetles). These insects are commonly found in stagnant or slow-moving water bodies, often interacting with agricultural irrigation systems and man-made wetlands utilized for crop production.

Host crops: While primarily aquatic in nature, this species can become a pest in rice paddies and aquatic plant nurseries. The beetles and their larvae are known to graze on the tender stems and tissues of young plants, especially during the early stages of establishment when the plants are most vulnerable to physical damage.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Graptodytes varius is entirely aquatic. Adults hibernate in the mud or debris at the bottom of ponds during winter. In spring, they emerge to feed and reproduce, with females depositing eggs onto underwater vegetation. The larvae undergo several developmental stages before pupating in the moist soil along the banks of the water bodies.
