Madagascar hissing cockroach

Systematic position. The Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa) belongs to the order Blattodea, family Blaberidae. While frequently kept as exotic pets, these insects can become problematic pests in tropical agriculture, greenhouses, and storage facilities, where they exploit favorable microclimates to establish colonies.

Crops affected. This species is a generalist feeder with a broad diet. In agricultural settings, they are known to damage a variety of vegetable crops, including tomato seedlings, cucumber vines, and leafy greens. Additionally, they often invade storages where they consume stored grains, seeds, and root vegetables, rendering agricultural produce unsuitable for sale or consumption.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. Females are ovoviviparous, which provides high survival rates for the nymphs immediately after birth. Under optimal conditions, the life cycle from egg to adult is relatively short, and populations can multiply rapidly if sanitation measures are ignored, as the insects are highly resilient and adaptable.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults feeding on plant tissue, which results in jagged wounds and destroyed foliage. They often target succulent parts of plants, causing stunted growth or total plant death.
