Tropical house cricket

Taxonomic position. The tropical house cricket (Gryllodes sigillatus) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Gryllidae. It is a highly thermophilic insect that has successfully adapted to human-made structures, primarily greenhouses, nurseries, and indoor plant facilities, where it acts as an invasive agricultural pest.

Biology and life cycle. This species undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. The adults, measuring approximately 15–20 mm, are characterized by their yellowish-brown bodies with distinctive dark cross-bands on the thorax. Given favorable temperatures, they can reproduce throughout the year, with females laying eggs directly into soil or growing media.

Nature of damage and pest status. As polyphagous feeders, these crickets pose a significant threat to young plants. They feed on succulent plant tissues, seedlings, germinating seeds, and root systems. Their nocturnal feeding behavior makes them difficult to detect until substantial damage to the plant stands becomes visible, often leading to total crop failure in greenhouse environments.

Affected crops. The pest causes damage to a wide range of horticultural crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and ornamental plants. Seedlings are particularly susceptible, as crickets frequently gnaw through the stems at the soil level, which causes the plants to collapse and die shortly after transplanting.

Control measures. Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• Maintaining high hygiene standards in greenhouses by removing plant debris and waste.
• Using authorized insecticidal baits or sprays formulated for greenhouse use.
• Deploying sticky traps or light traps to monitor and suppress adult populations.
• Ensuring rigorous inspection of imported plant materials to prevent the introduction of new cricket colonies.
