Coffee lace bug

Habrochila ghesquierei

Description

Habrochila ghesquierei is a serious insect pest belonging to the Tingidae family, commonly known as the coffee lace bug. These insects are classified within the order Hemiptera and are recognized for their distinct, delicate, lace-like appearance of the wings, which is a hallmark of the lace bug family.

The coffee lace bug primarily targets coffee trees (Coffea spp.). It is particularly problematic in tropical regions where coffee cultivation is intensive. The pest can spread rapidly through plantations, causing widespread damage if left uncontrolled, which significantly affects the yield and commercial value of coffee production.

The life cycle of the bug progresses through several nymphal instars before reaching the adult stage. Eggs are laid directly into the leaf tissue, ensuring protection during the initial developmental phases. Environmental factors such as temperature and relative humidity play a crucial role in determining the speed of their development and the overall size of the population.

Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults feeding on the underside of coffee leaves. By piercing the plant tissues and extracting sap, they cause characteristic chlorotic spots to appear on the upper surface. As the infestation progresses, these spots expand, leading to leaf necrosis, premature senescence, and ultimately, extensive leaf drop, which weakens the tree's vigor.

Management strategies for this pest require an integrated approach to maintain plantation health. This includes regular field inspections to detect early infestation, the promotion of natural biological control agents, and the judicious use of systemic insecticides when populations exceed economic injury levels. Proper orchard sanitation and pruning are also recommended to reduce the shelter and breeding grounds for the lace bugs.
