Description

The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) is a highly invasive insect pest belonging to the Pentatomidae family within the order Hemiptera. Originally native to East Asia, this species has become a significant threat to global agriculture due to its high reproductive rate, polyphagous feeding habits, and lack of natural predators in newly invaded regions.

This pest is known for its extreme polyphagy, attacking over 300 different plant species. Economically important hosts include pome fruits (apples, pears), stone fruits (peaches, cherries), berries, vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn), and various legumes such as soybeans. Its ability to feed on different parts of plants allows it to colonize diverse agricultural landscapes.

The lifecycle of the brown marmorated stink bug consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Female bugs lay clusters of eggs on the underside of leaves. The duration of development is highly temperature-dependent, with warmer climates facilitating a faster cycle and the production of multiple generations within a single growing season.

Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing plant tissues with their stylets to extract sap. This feeding behavior causes severe physiological disruptions, leading to fruit pitting, corking, tissue necrosis, and deformation. Severely infested fruits become unmarketable, and the damage often predisposes plants to secondary fungal or bacterial infections.

Sustainable strategies increasingly focus on combining pheromone-based monitoring with biological control agents and habitat management to reduce chemical reliance.
