Description

Haplaxius is a genus of planthoppers belonging to the family Cixiidae (order Hemiptera). These insects are recognized globally by agronomists as significant pests, particularly due to their capacity to act as vectors for various phytoplasmas that cause devastating diseases in palm species.

The primary hosts of this pest include coconut palms and oil palms. In affected areas, the presence of these insects is directly correlated with the decline of plantations. The economic impact is profound, as the infestation can lead to the total loss of commercially valuable trees within a short period.

The biology of Haplaxius involves distinct developmental phases. The nymphal stage is typically subterranean or found near the base of the plant, feeding on the roots of various grasses and weeds. Once they reach the adult stage, the insects fly to the canopy of the palms to feed on the foliage.

The damage caused by Haplaxius is twofold. Directly, they sap the vitality of the tree by feeding on phloem. Indirectly, and more importantly, they transmit pathogens like the lethal yellowing phytoplasma, which disrupts the tree's vascular system, leading to systemic decline and death.
