This insect is primarily recognized in agronomy as a significant vector capable of transmitting phytoplasma pathogens, which cause devastating diseases such as the lethal yellowing of coconut palms in tropical regions.

The primary host plants for this pest are coconut palms and various other palm species. The insect feeds on the phloem sap of the host, which directly impacts the plant's nutrient distribution and vigor. While the mechanical damage caused by feeding is notable, the transmission of systemic plant pathogens is the most severe impact on agricultural productivity.

The life cycle of Haplaxius jamaicae consists of egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Nymphs typically dwell in the soil or near the base of the host plant, feeding on roots or lower stem tissues.
