Haplaxius pallidus is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Cixiidae family. It is a type of planthopper that has gained significant agricultural importance due to its role as a vector for serious phytoplasma diseases that threaten plant health globally.
The primary host plants for this pest include various palm species, most notably the coconut palm. In many regions, this insect is identified as the primary agent responsible for transmitting the lethal yellowing disease, which causes widespread mortality among palm plantations.
The biology of Haplaxius pallidus follows a classic hemimetabolous development cycle. Nymphs typically dwell in the soil or near the root zone, while adults are highly mobile, feeding on the vascular sap of host plants, which facilitates the transmission of pathogens into the phloem.
The damage caused by this pest is two-fold: direct mechanical injury from feeding and the indirect impact of pathogen injection. The latter is far more destructive, as the introduced phytoplasmas systemic interfere with the plant’s metabolism, resulting in fruit loss, inflorescence necrosis, and eventual death.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Agricultural practices include the systematic use of yellow sticky cards for population monitoring and the application of systemic insecticides to reduce adult populations.
