Hednota is a genus of moths belonging to the family Crambidae. These insects are recognized as significant pests in various agricultural settings, particularly in grasslands and cereal cropping systems. The genus is widely distributed, and its larvae are known for their destructive impact on the stems of host plants.

The primary hosts of Hednota include various species of cereals such as wheat, barley, and oats, as well as several wild grasses. The larvae prefer the basal parts of the plant, often creating protective silk-lined burrows in the soil or at the base of the stem, which makes them difficult to reach with standard contact insecticides.

The life cycle of the moth consists of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Development is heavily influenced by seasonal moisture and temperature patterns. Larvae typically emerge in early spring to begin feeding, often causing the most significant damage to young, developing stems before the crop reaches the reproductive stage.

Feeding damage typically presents as wilting and yellowing of the central shoot, a condition often referred to as 'deadheart'. Because the larvae feed internally within the stem, they disrupt the vascular tissue, which leads to stunted growth, reduced tillering, and often the death of the main tiller, causing yield losses.
