Banana leaf roller

Hedylepta monogona is a moth species belonging to the family Crambidae of the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, specifically adapted to feed on members of the Musa genus, commonly known as bananas.

The host range is primarily limited to banana plants. Both wild and cultivated varieties can be targeted by this pest, which utilizes the foliage of the plant for both nutrition and as a physical shelter during its larval stages.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult moth deposits eggs on the underside of banana leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae create protective enclosures by rolling the leaf edges and securing them with silk webbing, creating a secure environment to feed undisturbed.

The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by the presence of rolled, webbed leaves, leading to chlorosis and tissue necrosis. Severe infestations can result in extensive defoliation, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, ultimately stunting growth and negatively impacting fruit bunch development.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for maintaining healthy plantations:

• Regular field monitoring to detect early signs of leaf rolling and larval activity.
• Sanitation practices, including the manual removal and destruction of infested foliage.
• Application of microbial insecticides such as Bacillus thuringiensis.
