Description
Helicodonta is a genus of land snails belonging to the family Helicodontidae, within the class Gastropoda. These mollusks are recognized by their relatively small, flattened, or discoid shells. While not as large as some invasive slugs, they can reach significant population densities under favorable environmental conditions.
These pests primarily inhabit areas with high humidity and abundant vegetation. Gardens, greenhouses, and shaded areas with heavy leaf mulch provide the ideal microhabitat for their survival. They are nocturnal by nature, feeding during the evening and night, and spending the daylight hours concealed within the soil or deep inside dense plant foliage.
The life cycle of Helicodonta is heavily dependent on moisture availability. Reproduction involves laying eggs in moist soil crevices or beneath organic debris. The development rate is temperature-dependent, with optimal growth occurring during warm, rainy seasons. Due to their ability to aestivate in dry conditions, they can persist in landscapes even when temporary droughts occur.
The damage caused by Helicodonta involves feeding on the soft tissues of various plant species.
