Helicodonta obvoluta is a species of air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial gastropod mollusk in the family Bradybaenidae. While often found in natural habitats, it can act as an agricultural pest in garden settings, particularly in areas with humid microclimates where it thrives and feeds on cultivated vegetation.

The snail targets a wide range of plants, including leafy vegetables, seedlings, strawberries, and ornamental perennials. Its presence is most problematic in greenhouses, nurseries, and densely planted gardens where shade and moisture are abundant. The snail is primarily nocturnal and utilizes high-humidity periods to migrate across garden beds, consuming foliage along its path.

Regarding its biology and development, Helicodonta obvoluta reproduces by laying eggs in moist soil or organic debris. The life cycle is highly dependent on humidity levels, with populations peaking during wet spring and autumn seasons. These mollusks hibernate during winter in protected soil areas, emerging to feed and reproduce as soon as temperatures and moisture levels become favorable in the spring.

The damage caused by these snails is typically manifested as irregular holes in leaves, often starting from the margins or the center of the leaf blade. The presence of dried silvery mucus trails is a clear indicator of a gastropod infestation. Beyond mechanical injury, the damage opens plant tissues to secondary infections, such as bacterial rots and various fungal diseases that compromise overall plant health.
