The Roman snail (Helix pomatia) is a land gastropod mollusk belonging to the Helicidae family. While commonly recognized by its large, globose shell, this species is frequently identified as a significant pest in agricultural settings. These mollusks are primarily nocturnal and thrive in humid environments, which allows them to migrate and feed extensively on horticultural crops during the night.
This pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plants. It is particularly notorious for damaging succulent seedlings, leafy vegetables such as lettuce and cabbage, as well as vine crops and various ornamental flowering plants. In high density, these snails can cause devastating losses to young vegetable crops, often stripping plants of their foliage completely in a single night.
The biological development of the Roman snail is heavily influenced by environmental moisture. As hermaphrodites, they lay eggs in damp soil, where they are protected from desiccation. Their life cycle includes rapid growth phases during wet seasons, while periods of extreme drought trigger a state of aestivation, where the snails seal their shells to conserve moisture until favorable conditions return to the field.
Damage caused by this mollusk is characterized by irregular, ragged holes in leaf tissue, often leaving only the larger veins intact. Farmers also frequently observe trails of dried mucus across the surface of leaves and fruits, which significantly reduces the aesthetic and market value of the produce. Beyond direct consumption, they can act as vectors for various plant pathogens, further impacting crop health.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Prevention is key: maintain a clean field environment by removing debris, weeds, and hiding spots where snails rest during the day. Mechanical controls, such as barriers made of copper or crushed eggshells, can be effective in smaller gardens. For professional farming, the application of molluscicides containing metaldehyde remains the standard chemical control option when biological thresholds are exceeded.
