Turkish snail

Helix lucorum

Description

The Turkish snail (Helix lucorum) is a large land snail belonging to the family Helicidae. Often confused with other species like Helix pomatia, this snail is recognized as a significant agricultural and horticultural pest in many regions, characterized by its robust, often patterned shell and rapid adaptation to anthropogenically modified environments.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plants. It is particularly notorious for damaging vineyards, various vegetable crops such as lettuce, cabbage, and spinach, as well as garden flowers and fruit tree seedlings. In greenhouses and irrigated fields, the Turkish snail can cause devastating losses to young vegetation during early developmental stages.

The life cycle of Helix lucorum is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. As a hermaphrodite, it deposits clusters of eggs in moist soil. The snails exhibit nocturnal activity, spending the daylight hours in cool, damp crevices or under garden debris. They undergo periods of dormancy, particularly during dry or extremely cold weather, to survive unfavorable conditions.

The damage caused by these snails is primarily observed as large, ragged holes in leaves, stems, and fruits. Beyond physical consumption, the presence of their mucous trails significantly impacts the aesthetic value of produce and facilitates the transmission of various plant pathogens. A large population can clear entire sections of a crop within a very short timeframe.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Helix lucorum populations effectively:

  • Maintaining clean cultivation by removing weeds and plant debris to eliminate hiding spots.
  • Using copper-based barriers or abrasive materials like crushed eggshells or gravel around beds.
  • Hand-picking snails during evening hours or following rainfall when they are most active.
  • Applying certified molluscicides containing iron phosphate or metaldehyde.
  • Installing physical traps or beer-baited pits to attract and remove snails from vulnerable zones.
