Black-lipped snail
Helix melanostoma
Description
Systematic position: The black-lipped snail (Helix melanostoma) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, order Stylommatophora, and family Helicidae. This species is taxonomically related to the common garden snail but is characterized by a distinctive dark color around the peristome (the aperture of the shell), which is its primary identification feature in the field.
Crops affected: This gastropod is a generalist herbivore. It poses a significant threat to viticulture (vineyards), as well as to ornamental gardens, vegetable crops, and fruit orchards. It particularly favors leafy vegetables, herbaceous stems, and young seedlings, often consuming foliage during the cool, damp night hours.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Helix melanostoma is highly dependent on environmental moisture. Reproduction occurs when humidity is high. Eggs are deposited in clusters within moist soil or beneath decaying organic matter. Juveniles emerge and begin feeding on succulent tissues immediately, growing rapidly when conditions are favorable and entering a state of estivation (dormancy) during dry spells.
Damage and economic significance: Feeding damage manifests as large, irregular holes in leaves, often leading to the complete destruction of small plants. Beyond foliage damage, these snails cause severe economic losses by damaging ripening fruits, rendering them unsuitable for market due to bite marks and slime trails. Slime trails are vectors for various bacterial and fungal pathogens that further degrade plant health.
Protection measures: Controlling Helix melanostoma requires a multi-faceted approach centered on habitat modification and chemical management:
- Eliminate breeding sites by removing debris, boards, and overgrown weeds.
- Implement mechanical barriers like copper strips or abrasive materials around susceptible plants.
- Use physical hand-picking during early morning or evening hours.
- Apply specialized molluscicides containing iron phosphate, which is less toxic to non-target wildlife.
- Encourage biodiversity to attract natural predators such as ground beetles, hedgehogs, and insectivorous birds.
