Description
The Roman snail (Helix pomatia) is a gastropod mollusk belonging to the order Stylommatophora and the family Helicidae. Often recognized by its large, globose shell, this snail prefers moist environments, making gardens and agricultural fields ideal habitats for its proliferation.
This pest is known to cause significant damage to a wide range of horticultural and vegetable crops. Specifically, it feeds on grapevine leaves, various salad crops, cabbage, and young strawberry seedlings. The snail uses its rasping tongue (radula) to graze on plant tissues, often causing severe defoliation.
The life cycle of Helix pomatia is highly dependent on humidity levels. As a hermaphroditic species, it lays eggs in clusters within the soil. Under favorable warm and humid conditions, juvenile snails emerge and begin feeding rapidly. During dry spells or winter, they retreat deep into the soil to undergo hibernation, sealing their shells with a calcareous epiphragm.
The damage caused by these snails is characterized by large, irregular holes in leaves and stems, as well as the consumption of entire seedlings. Beyond the physical damage, the presence of these pests is indicated by mucus trails left on foliage, which significantly reduces the quality and marketability of the produce.
Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for control:
- maintaining soil cultivation to destroy snail habitats and nests;
- using physical barriers such as crushed eggshells, gravel, or ash around vulnerable plants;
- hand-picking snails during peak activity times at dusk;
- applying molluscicides containing iron phosphate, which are more environmentally friendly than traditional chemical treatments.
