Description
The cabbage webworm (Hellula hydralis) is a moth belonging to the family Pyralidae, order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in various regions, particularly where warm weather conditions support continuous breeding cycles throughout the growing season.
This pest primarily attacks plants within the Brassicaceae family. It causes severe damage to various cultivars including cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, and turnip. Wild mustards and other cruciferous weeds also serve as host plants, maintaining the population density in agricultural landscapes.
The life cycle consists of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. The larvae are the primary stage causing damage. After hatching, they feed on leaves and bore into the growing points or stems. Once mature, the larvae pupate within protective silken cocoons, often buried in the soil or hidden within folded leaves.
The damage caused by the cabbage webworm is destructive. Young larvae skeletonize the leaves, while older larvae bore into stems and hearts of plants. This feeding pattern stunts plant growth, reduces the market value of the produce, and can lead to the total loss of the crop if left unmanaged.
Management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include:
