Description

The Cabbage webworm (Hellula undalis) is a destructive insect belonging to the Crambidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic losses in various vegetable-producing regions worldwide.

This species primarily targets plants within the Brassicaceae family. Its host range includes common crops such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, and bok choy. In many areas, the pest also sustains itself on wild cruciferous weeds, which serve as reservoirs between planting cycles.

The biological cycle of the moth is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations to occur during a single growing season. After mating, females deposit eggs on host plants, and the resulting larvae emerge to begin their feeding cycle, often spinning protective webs around the leaves.

Larval feeding causes severe damage, ranging from leaf skeletonization to the boring of stems and heart tissue. This prevents the normal development of the plant and often leads to stunted growth, wilting, or complete destruction of the marketable portion of the crop, making it highly susceptible to secondary infections.

Chemical control is often necessary, utilizing targeted insecticides during the early larval stages, supplemented by biological control agents and consistent monitoring to time applications for maximum effectiveness.
