Description

The Bee hawkmoth, belonging to the genus Hemaris, is a fascinating member of the Sphingidae family. Often mistaken for a bumblebee due to its appearance and hovering flight, this moth acts as an important pollinator in its adult stage. However, from an agricultural perspective, the larval stage requires close monitoring to prevent damage to host plants.

The primary hosts for Hemaris larvae are plants within the Caprifoliaceae family, most notably honeysuckle (Lonicera). In specialized nursery settings or berry gardens, heavy infestations of these caterpillars can significantly reduce the vitality of the bushes by consuming large amounts of foliage during their development.

The life cycle typically consists of one or two generations per year, depending on the geographic climate. The insects overwinter in the pupal stage, usually buried in the soil or leaf litter near the host plant. Once adult moths emerge in the spring, they mate and lay eggs on the undersides of leaves, ensuring the larvae have immediate access to a food source.

Damage caused by the larvae is characterized by defoliation. Early-stage caterpillars create small, irregular holes in the leaves, while later instars can consume the entire leaf blade, leaving only the primary veins. This intensive feeding behavior reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to weakened growth and susceptibility to secondary infections.

Effective management strategies combine cultural, biological, and chemical methods. Cultural practices, such as maintaining clean cultivation and tilling the soil around host plants in late autumn, can destroy overwintering pupae. For biological control, Bacillus thuringiensis-based products are highly effective against young larvae without disrupting the ecological balance of the garden.
