Description

The Hummingbird clearwing moth (Hemaris thysbe) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sphingidae. Renowned for its rapid wing beats and hovering flight pattern, this insect is frequently mistaken for a hummingbird or a bumblebee. Unlike many other hawkmoths, it is primarily diurnal, actively visiting flowers for nectar throughout the day.

This species primarily feeds on plants within the Caprifoliaceae family, such as honeysuckle (Lonicera), snowberry (Symphoricarpos), and viburnum. While often appreciated by enthusiasts for their pollination services, their larval stage can cause localized damage to ornamental gardens and hedge plantings.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs individually on the underside of leaves. Larvae, which are green with specific markings, go through five instars. After completing their growth, the larvae descend to the soil to pupate, usually remaining in the leaf litter or shallow soil until the following season.

Damage is exclusively caused by the larvae, which are voracious feeders. They can strip foliage from host plants, leading to severe defoliation if populations are high. While usually not a major agricultural pest, severe infestations can significantly impact the health and visual appeal of ornamental hedges and shrubs.

Effective management and control strategies include:

  • Regular monitoring of host plants for eggs and early-instar caterpillars.
  • Hand-picking larvae when populations are low or in small garden areas.
  • Utilizing biological pesticides like Bacillus thuringiensis to target larvae without harming beneficial insects.
  • Pruning severely infested branches to reduce local pest density.
