Hemicriconemoides

Hemicriconemoides is a genus of ectoparasitic nematodes within the family Criconematidae, order Tylenchida. These microscopic organisms are known for their distinct cuticular annulation and are widely recognized in nematology as significant pathogens of various agricultural and ornamental plants, particularly in sandy soil environments.

The host range of this nematode is quite broad, heavily impacting perennial crops. Major hosts include citrus trees, peach trees, grapevines, and various fruit-bearing shrubs. Because these nematodes remain associated with roots for extended periods, they represent a persistent threat to orchards and vineyards, often leading to long-term decline in plant vigor.

Regarding their biology, Hemicriconemoides species are obligate parasites that feed externally on root tissues. They use a long, protrusible stylet to pierce the root cortex and extract nutrients. Their life cycle is relatively slow compared to other nematode species, but their ability to remain attached to the roots allows them to persist even under varying environmental conditions.

The damage caused by these nematodes is primarily observed as root system retardation. Infected plants often show symptoms of nutrient deficiency, such as leaf yellowing, wilting, and overall stunted growth. The damage to the root epidermis also creates open pathways for secondary infections by soil-borne fungi and bacteria, which can exacerbate the decline and potentially lead to tree mortality.
