Description
Hemicriconemoides cocophilus is a plant-parasitic nematode species belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Criconematidae. As an ectoparasite, it primarily dwells in the rhizosphere, where it utilizes its specialized feeding tube to penetrate root tissues and extract essential plant nutrients, leading to significant physiological stress.
The primary host for this nematode is the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), although it exhibits a wider host range including various tropical fruits and commercial crops. It is widely recognized in agricultural research as a significant factor in the decline of productivity in palm plantations located across tropical regions globally.
The life cycle of the nematode is closely linked to soil moisture and temperature. Eggs are laid in the soil or near the roots, and the juveniles must actively seek a host to feed. The presence of high soil moisture and sandy-loam conditions typically favors their survival and rapid population expansion, which often leads to aggregated distributions within the field.
The damage caused by Hemicriconemoides cocophilus is primarily concentrated in the root system. Infested plants show necrotic lesions on the root surface, reduced root hair development, and compromised water and nutrient uptake. Above-ground symptoms include stunted growth, reduced leaf size, yellowing of foliage, and a general decline in yield, which can eventually lead to tree mortality.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate soil populations. Recommended strategies include:
