Hemicriconemoides kanayaensis is a species of ectoparasitic plant-nematode belonging to the order Rhabditida and the family Criconematidae. This organism is recognized as a significant pest, particularly in the cultivation of tea plants, where it impairs root function.
The primary host for this nematode is the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). It thrives in well-drained soils, where it actively seeks out the root tips of the host plant to feed on the cytoplasm of epidermal cells using its specialized stylet.
Its biological cycle is relatively stable, with populations fluctuating based on soil temperature and moisture content. The nematode undergoes several molts within the soil environment before reaching maturity, maintaining a continuous presence in the rhizosphere of established tea bushes.
