Litchi ring nematode
Hemicriconemoides litchi
Description
Hemicriconemoides litchi is a significant plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Criconematidae. This microscopic roundworm is recognized as an obligate ectoparasite, primarily affecting the root systems of tropical and subtropical trees, with a specific preference for its namesake host.
The primary host crop for this pest is the lychee (Litchi chinensis). Infestations are frequently observed in orchards where monoculture practices provide a continuous food supply, allowing the nematode population to reach levels that cause severe stress to the trees and significantly impact fruit production.
The life cycle of H. litchi is entirely soil-borne, consisting of egg, juvenile, and adult stages. The nematode utilizes a specialized stylet to penetrate root tissues and extract nutrients from the cortical cells. Its reproductive success is highly dependent on favorable soil moisture and the presence of root exudates, which serve as chemical cues for locating host roots.
The damage caused by this nematode is often cumulative. Symptoms include stunted tree growth, premature yellowing of leaves, and a depleted root system with fewer feeder roots. The damage caused by feeding facilitates secondary infections, as the punctures create entry points for soil-borne pathogenic fungi and bacteria, which often exacerbate the decline of the orchard.
Management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to maintain population levels below economic injury thresholds. Key practices include:
- Strict nursery sanitation to ensure the use of nematode-free planting stock.
- Regular soil testing to monitor nematode population densities.
- Application of organic amendments to increase soil suppressiveness.
- Use of biological control agents, such as specialized nematophagous fungi.
- Judicious use of nematicides only when populations reach critical levels.
