Description
Hendecasis duplifascialis, commonly referred to as the jasmine leaf webworm, is a moth species belonging to the Crambidae family. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, specifically targeting various species of jasmine plants (Jasminum) which are highly valued for their ornamental and aromatic properties.
The host range is primarily limited to plants within the Jasminum genus. In suitable environments, the pest can quickly establish itself within commercial nurseries or home gardens, leading to rapid degradation of plant health and significant loss of aesthetic or economic value.
The life cycle of the moth consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on tender shoot tips or floral buds. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding on the soft tissues. They often utilize silk to web leaves together, creating a protective enclosure that makes them difficult to target with external contact sprays.
Feeding damage is characterized by the destruction of apical buds and young foliage. Infested plants exhibit stunted growth, withered flowers, and distorted stems. If left untreated, severe infestations can lead to complete defoliation and a total loss of the floral crop, which is particularly devastating for commercial producers.
Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, including the use of pheromone traps for monitoring adult flights, are crucial. Systemic insecticides should be applied during the early larval stage to ensure the chemical reaches the larvae within their webbed nests. Additionally, physical removal of infested branches helps to lower the population pressure.
