Description

Systematic position. The grass webworm (Herpetogramma licarsisalis) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. Known globally as a serious agricultural and turf pest, this species is characterized by its adaptability to various climate zones and its ability to rapidly infest large areas of grassy vegetation.

Host crops. This species is a polyphagous pest, though it has a strong preference for grasses (Poaceae). It is particularly destructive to permanent pastures, meadows, and high-value turf such as golf courses and athletic fields. In terms of primary food crops, it frequently causes damage to rice, corn, sorghum, and millet, potentially leading to significant yield losses in affected regions.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Herpetogramma licarsisalis consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female moth deposits eggs on the leaves of host plants. The larvae, which are the main feeding stage, are nocturnal. During the day, they remain in silken galleries constructed between leaves or in the thatch layer at the soil surface, which provides protection from predators and environmental factors.

Character of damage and harm. Larval feeding causes skeletonization of leaves, as they consume the green tissue while leaving the veins intact. In severe infestations, the larvae can consume the entire leaf blade, leading to the browning and eventual death of the grass canopy. The presence of silk webbing is a diagnostic sign of their activity, often preceding the total degradation of the infested turf or crop area.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

  • Frequent monitoring to detect adult moths via light traps or pheromone lures.
  • Promoting healthy plant growth through proper irrigation and fertilization.
  • Targeted application of insecticides, ideally during the early larval stages when they are most vulnerable.
  • Using biological agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which are effective against young larvae with minimal environmental impact.
Cultural practices such as varying mowing heights can also help reduce the suitability of the habitat for larval development.
