Host plants and damage: The primary host plant for this pest is rice (Oryza sativa). The larvae are considered specialized leaf-feeders. High-density infestations lead to severe defoliation, which directly impacts the plant's capacity for photosynthesis, resulting in reduced grain weight, lower crop quality, and significant yield losses.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female moth lays eggs on the leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding. Depending on environmental conditions, the life cycle duration can vary, allowing for several generations per season, which increases the risk of population explosions.

Damage patterns: The larvae of Herpetogramma mutualis are known for their leaf-rolling behavior. They fold the leaf edges together and fasten them with silk, creating a protective shelter. Inside these folds, they feed on the leaf tissues, initially causing white linear streaks and eventually large, irregular lesions that skeletonize the foliage.
