Heterogenea

Systematic position. The genus Heterogenea belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Limacodidae, commonly known as slug moths or slug caterpillars. The larvae are distinctively characterized by their flattened, slug-like body shape, lacking prominent prolegs, which distinguishes them from typical lepidopteran larvae.

Host plants. These pests are polyphagous and target a variety of deciduous trees and shrubs. In agricultural and horticultural settings, they are frequently found on orchard crops, including apple, pear, and stone fruits. They are also common in woodland environments, feeding on oak, beech, and hazel, which allows them to migrate into adjacent gardens or nurseries.

Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding immediately. They typically spend the winter in the pupal stage, encased within a hard, silken cocoon often located at the base of trees, in leaf litter, or in protected crevices in the bark.

Damage and economic impact. Larval feeding involves the skeletonization of leaves, progressing to the consumption of the entire leaf lamina, leaving only the primary veins. Severe infestations result in significant defoliation, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the tree, weakens its physiological health, and can lead to yield loss. Additionally, many species in this family possess urticating hairs that cause painful skin irritation upon contact.

Management and control. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Heterogenea populations. Cultural practices, such as removing fallen leaf litter during the autumn to destroy overwintering cocoons, are highly effective. For chemical control, selective biorational insecticides such as those containing Bacillus thuringiensis are preferred to minimize impact on beneficial insects. During population peaks, systemic or contact insecticides may be necessary to protect foliage.
